Words are hard. And not just the obvious ones like ‘granite’ and ‘4D Sudoku’. Guess what: words are even harder when they appear on a digital screen.
If you’re responsible for writing copy that ends up in front of your external audiences, you’ll get a lot from this course. You don’t need to be an experienced writer, or someone who knows digital inside out. You just need to be interested in learning some new techniques and putting them to use.
So join Culture Republic on 22 June for an all-day training Writing For Digital Workshop with Alan Black, an award-winning copywriter with over 19 years experience, and Galen O’Hanlon trainer and writer, at writing agency Blackad, who between them have trained people right across the UK.
At this workshop, you’ll learn:
• What does the reader want from your digital words?
• How can you help?
• Organising and summarising online.
• Force it to the beginning – F-shape and 18 characters.
• Reducing the cognitive load on your readers.
• How to define and refine your digital tone of voice.
• What sort of words work? Style and principles.
• Short constructions.
• Make the good stuff leap off the screen.
• Common user experience issues, and how copy can help.
• Accessibility – make sure everyone’s welcome.
• Search – a short guide to getting your words found.
• Social – trends and pointers for your language.
Once you register, we’ll send you a short online questionnaire. Why? We want to know some of the issues you’d most like to solve. We’ll then use a selection of these examples during the session. Think of this as group therapy for writers. What happens in the workshop room, stays in the workshop room.
Do I need a laptop?
Heavens no – leave it in the office. This workshop is all about ideas, tips and techniques. You’ll be writing – that’s for sure. But we’ll keep you away from keyboards and trackpads, just for a day.

Alan Black and Galen O’Hanlon from Blackad have, between them, trained people right across the UK, like Edinburgh International Festival, Balfour Beatty and Vodafone.
But they’re not really trainers. They’re writers.
Alan has worked on large digital content projects for Tesco.com, AXA, Crieff Hydro, Scottish Ballet and Scottish Enterprise. He’s been writing copy professionally since 1995.
Galen writes copy and helps clients define and deliver their tone of voice across digital. He’s worked on large projects for CalMac and Skills Development Scotland, and helped smaller clients like Soar put their brand into words. He’s been writing copy since 2011.
